I wondered if you'd read that Dan Charnas book THE BIG PAYBACK, there's a great story in there about "Rapture" which explains that Fab Five Freddy was going by Fred Fab Five but Debbie Harry got it twisted and he ended up changing his name to take advantage of the name check. Feels crazy that the first ever white girl rap moment got a rap pioneer to change his name. Power!
Thank you! I have read Dan Charnas’ The Big Payback, but didn’t finish it because some asshole lost or stole my copy after taking it on tour without asking (coughHIMANSHUcough). I didn’t remember that story but that is awesome. Fab Five Freddy has a nicer ring to it. Sometimes I see that dude at art openings and such, he is still one of the coolest motherfuckers in New York.
