I wrote a bit here about Frankie, and his new album, Channel Orange. Photo by Nabil Elderkin, from my Spin feature on him.
Excerpts from my notes written during the listening session:
this talented motherfucker
this dude is a total student of his predecessors
really doe? the fuck!!
this is like when kellz first emerged or d’angelo
is this what people felt like when they first heard purple rain or hot buttered soul
depth of the production is bazonkers
epic. amazing. i need better speakers.
THIS DUDE IS LIKE A FUCKING BEACON IN THE FUCKING NIGHT
this song is making me think about the afghan poppy trade. WHAT THE HELL THO
fundamental respect for women and women’s work
FRANK THE FUCK THO DOG!
etc.
Obviously, I think that the record is good.

Loved this song so much, and it weirdly got me through a break-up? I was feeling the realness of it. Played it hundreds of times on the iPod, walking to work from the subway. “No special effects, just rep my set.” What happened to Deemi tho?! ATLANTIC RECORDS QUE TAL!

HOW DID I JUST HEAR THIS NOW? NO MATTER. STOP THE PRESSES, TAKE YR MEDS, CHANGE YR PANTYHOSE AND CALL YR GRANDMA CAUSE SISTERS WITH VOICES ARE DROPPING A NEW ALBUM IN TWELVE DAYS AND FINNA SHOW THESE LIL CASSIE VENTURAS RUNNING AROUND HOW TO FUCK UP A HOOK. WITH GUSTO. THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE SUPER RELIG CUZ COKO HAS IMMERSED HERSELF IN THE CLOTH SINCE ‘97 WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE BUT THEY ARE APPARENTLY JUST CRESTING ON THE VIBES OF THEIR GREATEST HITS WHICH IS MORE THAN FINE. I’M ABOUT TO BECOME A REAL PUNK THIS SUMMER. EXPECT TO SEE ME AT ALL YOUR BLOCK PARTIES, HALF-TRASHED AND SCREAMING ON YR DJ TIL S/HE PLAYS THIS SHIT. GET EXCITEDDDDDDD!!!!!

Brackles played this on Rinse this morning [EST, afternoon to you GMT people], a 2009 track from Funky Twinz f. Angel J (thx @konkretejungle for the ID). It’s got exactly the elements that made me love UK funky house in the first place — R&B proclivities, house diva lineage, dancefloor love-longing. Plus Angel J has some kind of ’90s new jack vibe going on, like sweet teen Shanice singles or an unreleased track from the Boomerang soundtrack. I’m like, yo it’s summer where the F is my boyfriend. And then I’m like oh yeah he’s at pissing Primavera in Barcelona running around getting tan and then I remember that I hate him. But I love this song! Get off Tumblr, go outside!

At first this was playing out like a relatively rote, post-Keyshia’s second album style Sean Garrett R&B track, but by the time the first chorus hits you’re like ‘this chick wants to HUSTLE.’ If her delivery on the third verse is any indication, K Michelle is not trying to go back home to Memphis. Also, I LOVE anyone who gets melodramatic in their videos. Not Beyonce style hair-whippery melodramatic, but like ‘I feel my own song so hard that my eye vessels are hemorrhaging.’ Putting in WORK. Bonus points for matching the piano to the Manic Panic.
